In the midst of all the lively music and the glittery dances, the national anthems of Greece, Brazil and Tokyo were sung as a mark of the closure of Rio 2016 and the Olympic flag was handed over to Tokyo, which hosts Olympic Games 2020. The concluding program was held at the historic Maracana on Sunday.
At the closing ceremony, the Indian flag was carried by Wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won the bronze medal.
The continuous rain was like a test for Rio during the closing ceremony nevertheless, it did not diminish the eagerness of the athletes to participate in the closing ceremony. They happily marched into the arena holding the country flags they represented.
The volunteers and representatives were honoured for their tireless work. Rio exhibited its art and crafts with all the vitality and strength. Martinho da Vila, an author-singer and composer for more than 50 years, charmed the crowd with his delightful performance.
The gigantic screen showed the emotions and winning moments of the athletes in the background.
Abe – the Super Mario
Japan’s Prime Minister took over the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as Super Mario and was helped by Doraemon. They presented how the Olympics will take a distinct turn. As the Multiple Olympic gold-medallist swimmer, Kosuke Kitajima took the red ball from Abe it indicated as the start of fireworks.
Nuzman acknowledged the athletes who set many world records saying “you inspire the youth in believing that a dream can come true.”
After extinguishing the Olympic flame, Brazil said Obrigado (thank you in Portuguese) while Japan said Arigato (Thank you in Japanese). Japan extended the invitation saying ‘See you in Tokyo.’
